Mostly congenital: Hypothyroidism in the newborn may be caused by:missing or poorly developed thyroid gland(sometimes absent or in wrong place or ectopic)pituitary gland not stimulating thyroid gland or thyroid hormones incorrectly formed and not working correctly.Usually detected at birth with blood testing.
