Any differences in how to treat acne in dark skinned versus light skinned people (especially to avoid scarring)?

Dark skin acne: Inflammatory acne develops and is treated the same way regardless of skin color, and with the right regimen is easy to clear. There are several options including topical treatment as well as accutane. According to the international journal of dermatology, "benzoyl peroxide is particularly effective for the inflammatory component." benzoyl peroxide is a mild drying and peeling agent.

Not for treatment: But the treatment of the scars is different. Darker skinned people have some limitations regarding the depth of the skin you can treat. That is, in light skinned people you can laser or peel to a deeper depth to allow you improve the scarring. The same depth of peel in a dark skinned person risks depigmentation (permanent lightening of skin color). Your md should be able to advise you on this.

No: Acne is no different for dark or light skinned individuals. Darker skinned people can have darkening of healed lesions that can require many months to years to resolve. Retinoids and hydroquinone can help significantly.
