Reflex: A reflex has been described which causes a cough when the ear canal is irritated. By the way, we do not recommend that you use cotton swabs to clean the ear. Frequently, this causes wax to get pushed further into the canal and get stuck. It also causes irritation to the ear canal. I regularly remove wax plugs from ears in people who do this.
