Heart attack: An old name for heart attack was coronary thrombosis. We think a clot or thrombus causes most heart attacks.

Direct cause: Thrombosis of a coronary artery is the proximate cause of a heart attack. This can occur to thrombosis secondary to a ruptured plaque in the artery, or embolization to the artery from another source. Blocking the flow of blood leads to tissue damage in the area supplied by that artery.
