Time: Assuming the cough is a cold, a viral respiratory infection, there is really no way to get rid of it other than to give your immune system time. The average chest cold lasts 3 weeks! medications to relieve the symptoms are not very effective. Unless there is a bacterial infection, antibiotics are not helpful. See your doctor if you have a fever, shortness of breath or other medical problems.
