Voice change: It sounds like you have laryngitis, a viral infection of the vocal cords, which can be quite painful (especially to swallow). This usually runs a 4-5 day course and will resolve by itself. There is no specific treatment. Some people like to do warm salt water gargles to try to draw some of the swelling out of the vocal cords.

Hard to say: Based on your past history, this problem could be anything from simple reflux disease to a vocal cord polyp to a vocal cord lesion (non-cancerous or cancerous). If you tend to smoke or drink a significant amount, i would want to rule out a cancerous cause for your voice changes and throat pain. Your best bet is too an ENT doctor so he/she can look at your vocal cords.
