Periodontal disease: Doxycycline is a good broad spectrum antibiotic. Periodontal disease is cause by a gram negative bacteria. Penicillin type of antibiotics only treats gram positive bacteria infectionsl. I usually prescribe Doxycycline (100mg) before my pre-surgical therapy. We also use a low-dose of Doxycycline (20mg) taken in pill form to control gingival inflammation.
