A 20-year-old female asked:
Is there anything else besides lupus and crest syndrome that could lead to high centromere anitbodies on a nuclear ab screen? could it just be a fluke

Unlikely: The centromere antibody, especially in high concentration, is fairly specific for crest variant of systemic sclerosis. It may often precede any clinical signs of the disease. It is unusual to see and ANA with a centromere pattern just occurring as a 'fluke'.
