A member asked:

Is there a cumulative harmful effect of gadolinium, or an increased risk of developing complications or nephrogenic systemic fibrosis, after having numerous mris (12+) with gadolinium?

Ststemic fibrosis: This condition is usually seen in end-stage renal disease patients who are on hemodialysis. If you are not , you are not high risk for this but there is a theoretical risk.

See answer: The concerns with gadolinium contrast relating to nsf are not cumulative and are only in the setting of significant chronic renal insufficiency (gfr 30 or less) or rarely in the setting of acute renal injury (due to the temporal lag between egfr which is calculated using serum creatinine values and actual glomerular filtration rates) . Your dr. Can evaluate you, and order precautionary renal fun.
