Painful veins: Painful superficial veins in the legs can represent phlebitis. Usually treatment is straightforward and the condition is not dangerous. However, if the painful vein is actually a 'deep' vein, then it could represent deep venous thrombosis, and that can be dangerous if not treated because the vein clot can embolize up to the lungs. See your physician for an exam to determine what vein problem it is.

Could be.: Varicose veins are for the most part not dangerous but they do have a problematic potential. Varicose veins are due to malfunctioning valves in the saphenous system and usually cause symptoms of aching, heaviness, tired, cramping or leg swelling. These same veins can worsen and cause clots, bleeding and venous stasis ultimately leading to venous ulcers it is wise to see a vein specialist early.

Anecdotally,: I have had patients present for 1st time treatment because varicose veins had recently become painful after decades of having no problem. Then, while we're waiting for insurance or to get them on the schedule, they get their first blood clot. If you've had a recent increase in pain, you may be developing phlebitis and are at risk. Be leery of self supporting full thigh hose in this setting.
