Herpes zoster: Varicella zoster , or shingles occurs when the virus is reactivated after being dormant within nerve roots since a previous episode of chickenpox. Herpes zoster occurs mainly in people over age 50 and immunosuppressed persons. The reactivated virus travels along peripheral nerve, causing skin vesicles, itching, and sharp, stabbing pain. The skin lesions usually follow dermatomes of affected nerves.
