Chiari malformation: Your ex husband had a chiari type 1 malformation unless he had a malformation of the spine. Most people will go through their whole life without symptoms. The chiari malformation may have been found when he had neuroimaging for a head injury, headaches or some other condition. Just having a chiari malformation is not necessarily disabling.

Not usually.: Often an MRI diagnosis. Symptoms can be disabling in which case surgery (chiari decompression) will help.

Get evaluated: Chiari malformation diagnosis requires a head and cervical MRI without contrast. In confirmed cases, a lumbar MRI can assess for a tethered spinal cord which may need to be released at some point. The most common symptom is headache but dizziness, balance problems, and tingling in arms/hands can also occur.
