Maybe BUT...: If you know that several members of your family have had strokes then you should be encouraged to reduce your risk factors. Don't smoke, control your weight, keep your blood pressure under control, exercise regularly, etc. You can't change your genes but you can minimize your risks. I call it playing your cards smart. Yes: there is a genetic component to stroke risk, but there are many factors that one can control to limit the risk.
