A member asked:

What happens if strokes run in someones family, can they go ahead and take medicine early to prevent it more effectively?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Do this:: 1) keep your BP under good control 2)check your pulse regularly and report irregularity as atrial fibrillation (an irregularly irregular rhythm) is a leading cause of stroke 3) at 50 get a carotid duplex exam & repeat it periodically depending on the result 4)At age 50, begin taking 81 mg of aspirin daily 5) get your lipids checked and, if your annual risk is >7.5%), start a statin.
