A member asked:

I just yawned and my jaw/throat area got a cramp. it hurt really bad for about 10 seconds and felt like someone was sticking a needle in my jaw-throat area! why did this happen?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

It is a muscle spasm: When you yawn the jaw muscles can get out of sync and the main opening muscle of the jaw called the lateral pterygoid muscle can get a spasm. It is nothing to worry about. Be careful when you yawn. It is like a charley horse.
