Good question!?: Almost all cases of cervical cancer are felt to be related to certain strains of HPV infection through prior sexual contact. It often takes many years for cancer to develop after exposure, and the vast majority of HPV infections do not turn into cancer. It's possible that family history & genetics may play some role in how likely one is to develop this cancer, though it's not yet well understood.
