Absorption.: Putting anything inside the nares will cause absorption of the substance, and in the case of anything menthol, it's toxic. Most products designed to be ingested use a very dilute form of it, but this site discusses some of the reasons why certain forms should not be ingested. The ointment form is pretty concentrated.
