Yes: Once a upon a time there was herpes simplex type one which was the cause of oral cold sores and herpes simplex two which was the cause of genital sores. Things have become more confused as both types of herpes can infect either tissues. Most of use are exposed to herpes simplex one before age 5 and then are immune to herpes simplex one infecting our genital tissues. Ulcers are another story.
