Are oral herpes from oral sex and ulcers/cold sores similar things?

Hsv type 1 usually is associated with cold sores and hsv type 2 is associated with genital herpes. However any one can get cold sores if they come into contact with the genital area of an hsv type 2 infected person who is contagious at that time and vice versa.
