Not sure: Some find that applying table salt on the sores may help (painful when applied), others have tried topical antibiotic with success. Still others have been treated with a topical cortisone paste. All of which work for some people. There is no sure cure since we do not know what causes canker sores yet.

rinsing: Rinsing your mouth with a 5 oz cup of half water and half hydrogen peroxide, one mouthful for 2 minutes and expectorate 3 times a day until resolution.

Soft tissue laser: For both "cold sores" herpes simplex and "canker sores" aphthous ulcers, I have had much success with a quick treatment with a soft tissue laser (painless). I have many patients who come in regularly right when these pop up and are very satisfied with the results.

Consider cause: Prevention of recurrent canker sores is better than treatment of them! sometimes these aphthous ulcers are the result of acid reflux or a reaction to you toothpaste (consider trying one that lacks sodium lauryl sulfate). Once you have one, try to avoid touching the area. I have found some success prescribing kenalog (triamcinolone) in orabase dental paste for them.
