Depends: Thyroidectomy can be performed for various reasons including: suspicious thyroid nodules, biopsy proven thyroid cancer, large thyroids (goiters) causing symptoms, treatment of hyperthyroidism. Typically there is a good reason why a doctor has recommended removing the thyroid since there are risks with any type of surgery.
