Goiter: Excellent question! Hyperthyroidism often results when the thyroid enlarges (goiter) and produces too much hormone, If it is producing too little hormone (hypothyroidism), the pituitary gland senses this and produces thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), which makes the thyroid grow in an attmpt to produce more hormone. So goiter is possible with both hypo and hyperthyroidism.
