Is there a reason heart surgery takes so long to perform?

Complexity: It requires a lot of preparation, general anesthesia with all the monitoring lines, procuring conduits if it is coronary surgery, putting patients on heart lung machine with cooling and warming. Overall it is a complex surgery in high risk patients. Overall results of cardiac surgery is excellent because the cardiac surgeon and his team don't leave anything for chance.

What operation?: Coronary bypass takes about 3-4 hours. Some time to, induce anesthesia. Some time to prep. Some time to open. Some time to do the graft harvest and anastomoses. Then time to close. Much quicker now than historically. Combined operations take longer, depending on the specifics.
