Non-cardiac CP: Sharp stabbing chest pain is usually caused by irritation/inflammation of the layers located between the lungs and the inner chest wall/rib cage. There are many causes for this, mostly benign and some serious. Other causes such are possible, such as pericarditis (inflammation of the lining of the heart) and pneumothorax. Seek medical care if it worsens.
