See below: If you have the less common gene, then you need blood work see an hematologist who knows more about this disease.

This is serious: If you're truly iron-overloaded and you're not fully worked up because 'you don't have the common gene' but perhaps have one of the five other loci abnormal, your life is in serious danger. Get with a specialist in gastroenterology (sounds like a good thing right now in any case) who's comfortable with the workup; if offered a liver biopsy, go for it.
