Blockage of arteries: Plaque consisting of cholesterol, fats, and calcium may build up inside of the arteries, usually those providing flow to the legs but also the kidneys, intestine of brain (carotid arteries). This is most common in people with diabetes, abnormal cholesterol, hypertension, and a history of smoking. These blockages can often be treated through a catheter with plaque removal or stents.
