Muscle tears: When exercising, stretching before and after a good idea. When starting out slower, and increasing weights less aggressively, you can avoid muscle fiber response like the one you had. Massaging muscle toward body hurts but helps. Swelling and pain can also be from tearing of the muscle from the bone, with black and blue under skin and severe pain & loss of that movement.
