A member asked:

If you we're born with an enlarged heart an it's grown bigger over time how much life expectancy do you have to live?

Cardiomegaly: This can't be answered without more information. Enlarged heart doesn't inform the cause of the enlargement. It is the reason the heart is enlarged and the specifics of the pathology of that enlargement which suggest the natural history of the problem.

Depends: Cardiomegaly isn't a diagnosis. It can be caused by a broad range of things, like birth defects, problems with transition from the fetal circulation, heart rhythm problems, fetal medication exposure or intrauterine infection. Longterm outcomes with respect to symptoms, life expectancy and any need for treatment, intervention or activity restrictions all depend on the specific heart condition.
