why are my thumbs in my hands cramping?

Depends: If symptons sudden, with activity, it suggests silent carpel tunnel syndrome in your diabetes affecting the relative strength of your thumb to your other fingers. If the problem is developing slowly, with arthritic stiffness and weakness, you may have neuropathy. Overuse of the hands can trigger thumb problems because it is the most vulnerable digit. Don't worry, there are solutions(splints).

Could b # of problem: Cramps in the hand can be a result of a number of different problems
carpal tunnel syndrome
osteoarthritis of the base joint of the thumb

just to name a few
you should be evaluated by a hand surgeon and the exam should include x-rays and a through neurological and vascular exam of the whole arm.

A 25-year-old female asked:
Up by my lunula on all nails but thumbs, my nails appear pale. It then returns to normal coloring after. My hands are cold a lot & no other symptoms?

Have it looked at.: You also have dry eyes. If your hands or fingers hurt or blanch when exposed to the cold (raynauds phenomena) given your age and gender i'd have this looked into. There is an uncommon disorder's may need to be excluded. Avoid agents that vasoconstrict like nicotine and caffeine if possible.

A 24-year-old female asked:
My nail beds have been turning purple recently, now my thumb nail beds are so purple they're nearly black. My hands don't feel cold - what is this?

Dr. Stephen Southard answered

Possibly related to: Spasms of the blood vessels of the nailbed, so called Raynaud's phenomenon. Cold sometimes is a trigger. But emotional stress can set it off too. Exposures to many different things can. In some cases this can be related to associated autoimmune disease like lupus, or other disease processes. Your best bet is to be evaluated by a doctor in person, to make sure nothing more concerning is going on

Yes, it would B 2 Ur: benefit 2 do so 2 rule out a fracture. It may B just a bad contusion but as long as there was no laceration infection would not B a problem. It is not an emergency so U could ice rest it & C what it does in a couple days. Those muscles R active in all hand functions. If it hurts more rather than getting better, get in 2 C an orthopedic surgeon.
