Feeling down: Adolescent depression like adult depression is marked by low mood, changes in energy, sleep and appetite ( usually lessened and loss of concentration and motivation. Which can affect school , home and friends. In addition some people also struggle with feelings of low self worth and even thoughts of hurting themselves or someone else. Severe Depression: Clinical depression presents with neurovegetative signs & symptoms, such as sadness, crying spells, flat affect, lack of motivation, changes in appetite/sleep/energy level, feelings of guilt & negative thoughts of self-harm. Also adolescents can show anger issues, poor impulse control and substance abuse.

TEEN Depression: Frequently, it presents with isolation, change in behavior from teen's baseline, difficulties in school, irritability, change in sleep patterns (+/-), change in eating (+/- or eating disorder development), increased sensitivity, increased pms symptoms (if female) other body complaints, not enjoying or wanting to do activities, or with self harm behaviors(drugs/cutting). Watch for bipolar symptoms!

Depression likely: Adolescent depression is more common than many parents believe. Some worrisome signs of possible depression include becoming withdrawn, loosing interest in things he/she used to enjoy, sleeping more than usual, feeling worthless or hopeless and having trouble concentrating. Teens may start eating a lot more or a lot less than usual, or become very anxious. Pediatricians can help evaluate.

Differentiation: It is normal for teens to go through a certain amount of existential angst, but this is different then depression. You are doing the right thing by asking here, but you need a real assessment. Do seek out professional help. Adolescent depression is serious but very treatable. If it turns out you aren't depressed you should still not be going through your feelings of hopelessness alone.
