Blood OK: Your blood has got to be read because that's what shows it is carrying oxygen. If you your blood ever comes out a different color, call 911. All seriousness aside, when oxygen attaches to your blood it gets it darker reddish color.

Dark vs bright red: Your blood when freshly oxygenated is bright red -- as it would be if you had cut an artery. Dark red blood is less oxygenated, as from a vein going back to the heart & lungs to be refreshed.
