See a dentist: Proper daily brushing and flossing can help reduce the effects of gum disease by reducing the numbers of destructive bacteria. But do we really get rid of periodontal disease - that's debate on that subject. A dentist needs to evaluate your gingiva and bone to determine the level of disease you have then formulate an appropriate treatment plan.

Gum disease: That depends upon your medical and dental conditions and the extent of the disease. Basically it's a matter of good daily oral hygiene (tooth brushing and flossing) as well as professional cleanings in the early stages with periodontal surgery in the later stages. Medications, medical conditions, nutrition play a role as well. See a periodontist for an evaluation and professional treatment.

Varies: If you have gum disease only, proper flossing and brushing after a dental cleaning can get rid of it. A good mouth rinse like closys will also help. Have your dentist or hygienist teach you proper technique. For information on treating gum and bone disease (periodontitis) go to centersfordentalmedicine.Com. The center for disease control says 75% of individuals over age 12 has periodontal disease.

Seek help: You don't cure gum disease, you control it by 1. Brushing daily, 2. Flossing daily, and 3. Regular cleanings. First see your dentist or a periodontist to learn how bad your disease is.
