A member asked:

When the body has to grow a bone graft, is it normally painful?

Not usually...: Bone grafting is surgery, just like any other type. As such, there is bruising, bleeding, swelling, tenderness, and discomfort. It is particularly difficult in the mouth, since we have to also talk and eat! however, the good news is that with proper post-operative management and medications, the amount of discomfort is usually minimal. Your implant surgeon will explain all this to you.

Bone graft pain: The bone graft itself does not cause pain. The discomfort comes more from the complete debridement of the area especially if it was infected before being grafted and the elevation of gum tissue to place membranes to cover the graft. Depending on the graft location and the person's susceptibility, there may also be swelling of the area.
