See below: Untreated encephalitis can lead to severe confusion, seizures, detrimental effects on the senses depending what part of the brain is most affected, and death.

Encephalitis: Most cases of encephalitis are caused by viral infections. There are very few viruses that can be treated with antimicrobial agents such as Acyclovir for herpes group of viruses. Some ricketssial infections can also be treated. Treatment is usually supportive. Encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) is a serious disease. I would follow the recommendations of the treating physicians.
