Polio vs botulism: Polio is a viral infection that causes destruction of the nerve cells in the spinal cord, whereas botulism is a bacterial infection that blocks release of the chemicals that help the muscles contract. Both cause various degrees of paralysis of muscles and may lead to respiratory failure.
