Botulism: Botulism is a rare but serious. It is caused by toxins from bacteria called clostridium botulinum. Botulism comes in three main forms: infant botulism, from food, from wounds. Botulism can lead to death, and is a medical emergency.

Paralysis: The toxin botulinum disrupts communication between nerves and muscles. It can be fatal when it interferes with the muscles of respiration. Infants and the elderly are at highest risk. Treatment is supportive until the effects of the toxin wear off.
