Great Question !!: Yes, having a major depressive episode and generalized anxiety or panic disorder can be confused with bipolar disorder. Sometimes this can be difficult to tease apart.

Yes: Usually it occurs when the racing thoughts of bipolar disorder are not distinguished from the anxious thoughts of generalized anxiety disorder. It can also occur if the restlessness of adhd is not distinguished from the physical anxiety of generalized anxiety disorder. Then either adhd or add is mistakenly diagnosed as bipolar because of their great symptom overlap.

Anxiety : Anxiety can cause restlessness, insomnia, pacing and depression can cause sadness and anger which could be confused for mixed symptoms of bipolar. Key feature of mania or hypomania is constant euphoria or irritability and decreased need for sleep.
