Confusing dates: We calculate the length of pregnancy starting with the first day of the last menstrual period prior to conception (which is usually about two weeks later in a 28 day cycle.) it is easier for most women to remember when their last period started than know exactly when they conceived. Therefore the length of pregnancy is 40 +/- 2 weeks from the start of the last period.
