Chronic inflammation: Your throat was infected and inflamed a year ago. This often includes the vocal cords. With your smoking, it has never had a chance to fully heal and recover. Chronic inflammation is very difficult to settle down. It's a smoldering fire that you just can't put out. While it is unlikely it has progressed to the point of throat cancer, you are heading that way with the continued insults to it.

Strep Pharyngitis: Strep throat if treated, there should be no residual effect like voice change. Raspy voice is related to larynx / vocal cord. Causes can be: anatomic anomaly of vocal cord, vocal cord polyp/ one sided paralysis of the cord, recurrent viral laryngitis, smoking, etc. You need evaluation by and ENT doc (oto-laryngologist).

2 things:: 1. Get checked (start with your family doc but you may need an ent). 2. Quit smoking already!
