Taste Buds: Most likely the "red bumps" at the back of your tongue are taste buds called circumvallate papillae. The number of these taste buds range from 8 to 14, they form a semicircular pattern meeting on the center of the tongue. There are other "lumps and bumps" that appear on the tongue but, they are usually accompanied by symptoms such as swelling, pain, blisters and so on.
