Depends: Depends on cause. If from atherosclerosis, Aspirin and lipid reducing drugs are effective. If there is a clotting disorder or heart arrhythmia with risk of forming blood clots, a "blood thinner" may be needed. If there is a high grade blockage in one of the carotid arteries to the brain , carotid surgery or angioplasty with stenting could be indicated.

Depends: What kind of stroke? Was it caused by a bleed into the brain from a vascular malformation or aneurysm? From a clot blocking a vessel -thrombotic? From a hypertensive bleed? Basic principles: stop smoking, no Cocaine use, adequate blood pressure control. Antiplatelet drugs if a thrombotic stroke, aggressive cholesterol, lifestyle modifications such as weight control and regular exercise. Good luck.
