Can you compare and contrast the differences between glaucoma and macular degeneration?

Sure: Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve which connects the eye to the brain. It is usually caused by high pressure in the eye. Macular degeneration is a disease of the part of the retina mostly responsible for straight-on vision which is usually age-related. Treatments exist for both conditions, although glaucoma is generally easier to treat effectively.

Eye diseases: Both are incurable. Both have recommended treatment algorithms. Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve that generally affects peripheral vision first and moves inward late in disease to affect center vision. Macular degeneration is a disease of the macula (center of vision), that slowly robs the ability to read and see centrally without affecting peripheral vision. Both generally aging diseases.

Opposites: Macular degeneration is a chronic retinal degenerative disease impacting the central vision whereas glaucoma is a chronic neurodegenerative disease impacting the peripheral vision. The 2 conditions can occur simultaneously or separately and both can progress with time
