Survival of fly: Flies are terrific at identifying threats and surviving. This includes flying in a seemingly scattered and random flight pattern which helps keep them from becoming a meal to birds and other predators. When you focus on the flying insect, the fly is moving faster than your focusing correction and so it is hard to keep it in view.
