Look for: If alzheimer's, which is best studied, initial symptoms may include changes in mood and behavior, especially mild depression, lacking clear explanation, about 2-3 yrs prior to memory loss. Short-term memory issues are early, with mild challenges in instrumental adl's such as checkbook errors, and losing objects, and getting lost while driving. Language changes may also be early, dropping adverbs.
