Maybe (not) . . .: Doesn't matter who prescribes medication if it's not for right reason at right dose for right duration. Also depends upon possible interaction w/other medications & conditions. Age, weight & even overall health are important variables. Elderly are often less able to tolerate benzodiazepines like Ativan (lorazepam) which increase risk for confusion, falls & fractures. But it may also be worth risk. Ask his doc.

Max 2 weeks: Ativan (lorazepam) is a strong anxiolytic. Its use in elderly considering your dad is over 80 should be limited to 2 weeks. Although in the same class, Clonazepam 0.5 mg on the other hand may be given for longer periods and is less addictive and has less effect on breathing than ativan, (lorazepam) especially if your dad is a smoker. You can ask your family physician and follow what he recommends.
