Depends...: Your symptom is a bit broad. It needs to be checked. You need to determine what is causing your heel pain. Podiatrists will examine and treat the cause of your heel pain but can also recommend proper long-term support and shoes to avoid recurrence.

Many causes exist: Chronic heel pain for many years can be caused by many things. Plantar fasciitis is the most common, caused by improper shoes that lack support, flip flops, barefoot walking, etc. A stress fracture would have healed long ago. You could have a bone cyst or other osseous condition. You need to see your local podiatrist for evaluation and treatment. Podiatrists are experts in foot treatment.

Plantar fasciitis.: The most common cause of heel pain is plantar fasciitis: an inflammation of a thick band of tissue that helps hold up the arch of your foot. It attaches to your heel bone, and is usually the most painful for the first few steps in the morning, or after sitting a long time and then standing quickly. See your podiatrist to rule out nerve entrapment, tendinitis, arthritic condition.
