Gradual: If you are getting irritation, start by using it every other day. It is also essential that you not overdo cleaning of your face. Use a gentle face wash with a built in moisturizer. Then use a moisturizer with a built in sun screen at least twice a day. Don't use astringents or products with alcohol as a base. If all this doesn't help, see doctor for a weaker strength of the medicine.

Gradually: Pay attention to your skin, if it is getting irritated stop until the irritation resolves and start again more slowly. Do not apply to wet skin, and protect your skin for the sun even more if you are using retin-a. Some people cannot use it every day, and may need less frequent applications to build a tolerance.

Several things: 1. Start with the lowest strength retin-a 2. Use a micronized formulation. 3. Apply after thoroughly drying your face. 4. Use no more than once a day. 5. If irritation develops, reduce to every other or every third day.

Possibly: I normally start patients on a .1 to .2% cream and have them apply it at night every other night for several weeks. If they tolerate that I have them slowly increase the application to every night. Hope this helps.
