Both good: Both are reasonably good tests. The urine sample has the advantage of allowing patients to get checked without subjecting themselves to a pelvic exam which deters some people.

Certainly: Subsidence of symptoms, e.g., painful urination or fever, does not generally mean complete clearing of uti. Premature termination of drug treatment results in leaving half-dead (antibiotic resistant) bugs behind.

Yes: Vaginal penetration by the penis will not induce infection simply because your partner has a uti.

Good hygiene: The best way to prevent bacterial infections, or viral infections, is good hygiene. Wash your hand properly and often. Next come nutrition; your immune system works much better if you give it the proper tools to work with. Next comes sleep; not sleeping properly or enough has been shown to weaken the immune system and increase susceptibility to infections.

A 20-year-old female asked:

I had UTI and while I was getting treated I was bleeding a lot, like a normal period, but is that normal? I had my period a week before I had uti.

No: Treating a UTI should not cause vaginal bleeding. Sometimes a UTI can cause some blood in your urine but it is usually not heavy. It is possible the symptoms felt like a UTI but were from some other cause.
