It's posterior : All the nerve roots of the lumbar plexus r combined into the sciatic nerve & it exits the pelvis through the sciatic notch & takes a journey down the posterior thighs shedding branches 2 various muscles and sensory nerves on it's journey & then divides into branches at or above the knees that then iterates via these nerves various muscles and skin as these branches divide into smaller nerves 2 toe.
