A member asked:

My girlfriend cracks her neck using her hands. it makes a loud pop, and often causes jolting "shock" sensations down her arms. she says it helps neck pain. is there a chance this could be damaging?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

The sound described may just be secondary to a dislocated vertebral bone, which slips back into place when manipulated. While in most cases this would be harmless, the "shock sensations" may indicate spinal nerve irritation. Best is to see an orthopedic MD or a neurology MD for imaging pictures to ascertain the cause and provide guidance.
